What is Hydroseeding? – FAQs

What is hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is a cost-effective method of seeding grass, wildflowers or other plants.

It involves spraying an eco friendly slurry of water, seed and fibre. When required other ingredients include fertiliser and growth promoting additives evenly over the soil using specialised equipment. This method promotes quicker germination, reduces erosion and provides excellent seed-to-soil contact compared to traditional seeding.

How does it work?

A hydroseeding machine mixes water, seed, mulch, fertiliser, and sometimes a tackifier into a uniform slurry. This mixture is sprayed over the prepared soil surface. The mulch protects the seeds, keeps them moist, and helps prevent erosion while the grass establishes.

How long does it take for grass to grow after hydroseeding?

You can typically see grass seedlings emerging within 7–10 days, depending on the weather, soil conditions, and seed type. A strong, lush lawn often establishes within 4–6 weeks with proper watering and care.

When is the best time to hydroseed?

The best time to hydroseed in the UK is during the spring and autumn when temperatures are moderate and rainfall is more consistent. However, hydroseeding can also be done in summer if adequate irrigation is available.

How much does hydroseeding cost?

Hydroseeding is more affordable than turfing and more effective than broadcasting seed. Costs vary based on the size of the area, site conditions and seed choice. Contact us for a quote tailored to your project.

What are the advantages of hydroseeding over turf or traditional seeding?

  • Faster germination than dry seeding

  • More affordable than laying turf

  • Excellent coverage, even on slopes and uneven ground

  • Reduces erosion and runoff

  • Creates strong root systems and healthier turf

Can hydroseeding be used on slopes?

Yes, hydroseeding is ideal for steep slopes and banks. The mulch in the slurry helps hold the soil in place and reduces erosion while the grass establishes.

What maintenance is required?

You’ll need to water the area regularly to keep the soil moist (but not soggy) until the grass is established. Avoid heavy foot traffic while the seedlings grow. We recommend mowing when the grass reaches around 3–4 inches tall and continuing with regular lawn care thereafter.

Is hydroseeding environmentally friendly?

Yes. Hydroseeding uses fewer resources than turf production and helps prevent soil erosion. The hydromulch we use is biodegradable and the process promotes natural root growth and soil health.

Can you hydroseed over existing grass?

Hydroseeding works best on prepared soil where the seed can make direct contact with the soil. If you have existing grass or weeds, it’s best to remove them and prepare the area properly for optimal results.

What types of seed can be used?

We can hydroseed a wide variety of seeds, including:

  • Lawn grasses for domestic gardens

  • Wildflower – both perennial and annual seed mixes

  • Tree and shrub

  • Erosion control blends

We’ll recommend the best seed mix for your specific site conditions and needs.
